Eh! Steve! Let’s take a look back at the games of 2020
Say what you will about the state of the world in 2020, at least we had a series of decent video games to play during that time. Perhaps not quite in the AAA game space, but there have been an abundance of interesting and creative titles hitting shelves physical and digital to peruse. I did not even get to access titles such as 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, or to play very far in Sakura Wars. Unmentioned but enjoyed by friends of mine were games like Maneater. While I myself had issue with it, DOOM Eternal was certainly no slouch in the design department. There were plenty of titles big and small to dig into.
What was lacking, I feel, were proper announcements. Save for the aforementioned DOOM Eternal and the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake earlier this year, it seems as if every hyped up release was somehow a letdown or controversial. Most notable was the overall silence from Nintendo, however. There are rumors abound as to why they’ve had so little to say, primarily regarding the potential existence of a more powerful model of Switch. Regardless of such validity, I think it is clear that Nintendo was not quite ready for the pandemic, and found themselves incapable of keeping abreast with the demands of development at home.
I’ll be curious to see what 2021 will bring. There are far more titles without release dates than with them, even for this early in the year. For me, however, I’m far more curious about the games we don’t know about yet.
