Sorry for the extra week break! I got sick and we never found the time to get together to chat about the Secret of Mana remake. However, it gave me enough time to finish the game, and… well, you’ll see some of my full thoughts later this week on the blog.

Neither Steve nor I seem to come to a real conclusion regarding remakes in this episode, but I do think there’s a lot of value in asking why you’re remaking something to begin with. In regards to Secret of Mana, it seems the only goal was to give it a visual touch-up. Was this the best move? If they were to change the original work, in what way should they have modified it? Should any remakes or modifications be like the original Final Fantasy remake on the PlayStation? I think it’s a topic without a proper answer. Unlike film or novels, software is still in a state of transition and requires additional effort to be moved from one platform to another. There’s merit in recreating something in an effort to preserve it, but there’s also value in trying to improve on a noteworthy but flawed product.

Got any remakes you were a big fan of? Please leave us comments below, comment on the Facebook page or e-mail ramblepak64 at gmail dot com with your thoughts on these years, and maybe we’ll read them on the show.

Opening theme music by my buddy Brandon, a.k.a. Fallen Prophecy.
