It feels a bit absurd to be even slightly underwhelmed by Infinity War, but I suppose the problem with commonplace spectacle is that it becomes… well, commonplace. Infinity War has the advantage of emotional stakes behind many of its action sequences, but after two hours of constant fights I was beginning to get exhausted towards the end. It will be interesting to see how I feel about this one after the sequel releases, and if it will be just as exhausting – or moreso – to marathon them back to back.

To that end, I think Marvel took a seemingly impossible task – to have over a dozen characters fighting and interacting with a villain whose motivations were nebulous until now – and deliver an entertaining experience. It’s not broken. It simply spends more time punching than talking. That Thanos is so well executed in that context is truly commendable.
