Eh! Steve! What did you think of Detective Pikachu?
Steve and I are not drunkards, but I do think a single glass of intoxicating liquids certainly helps us to loosen up and speak more easily about things. Or perhaps it simply makes it easier for us to put our feet in our respective mouths. Regardless, apologies if this week’s episode is less entertaining.
I do, however, hope for it to be informative in describing where we each stand on the film, and perhaps why its review scores are Not Very Effective. If it is ambitious, it is only in trying to present a mystery story within the constrained timespan of a family film whilst constantly needing to snap the attention of swiftly bored children with excitement and loud noises. Yes, the film could have been better. Yes, there are better films out there. Not many feel as pure in the fun that they present, however.
For those with children, I imagine it is easier to appreciate the simplicity of the fun offered by Detective Pikachu. For everyone else, they’ll no doubt be comparing it to films designed for a higher minimum age rating, and that is simply unfair.
