Apologies for the late release of this podcast. Steve and I had gotten to it later than usual due to urgent happenings, and then the Switch launch happened. I’ve been procrastinating getting the podcast done by playing Breath of the Wild or showing the system to friends. I should have instead held off on some of the festivities until this was ready for you. As a result, the blog and other progress will be slow for a bit. In addition, we seemed to have some background noise that didn’t seem so bad during the recording, but in hindsight made quite an impact. We’ll be more careful in the future.

As for Doctor Strange itself, I think we were both pleasantly surprised by it. However, I also think Marvel is running the risk of adhering too closely to their own formula, of which the early signs were there when Edgar Wright left Ant-Man. While each Marvel film had a similar feel, they were also able to differentiate themselves through the varied personalities of their characters. Each film had laughs, but each character’s personality changed the nature of the comedy. Steve Rogers never made quips like Tony Stark, and Thor’s fish-out-of-water antics set him apart from either character. Trying to make Steven Strange a quippy character just makes it feel like they’re trying to prepare a new Tony Stark, and neither the actor nor the character pull it off as well. It’s a mistake that I hope they’ll correct.
